Ihor M. Syvorotka
1948 – 2020
It is with sadness that we announce the recent passing of our esteemed project colleague Ihor M. Syvorotka.
Ihor was born in the city of Kherson on December 14, 1948. After graduating from high school, he entered the Physics Department of the Lviv State University. After two years of service in the army, he was sent to work at the newly organized Lviv Research Institute of Materials (which later evolved into today’s Scientific Research Company “Electron-Carat”). Since that time in 1972, his whole life was linked to this scientific institution. He began his career as an engineer and, over time, thanks to his persistence and professionalism, he became head of the scientific department, which he led with distinction to the last.
Ihor’s research activities were primarily in the physics and technology of magnetic materials: mainly epitaxial ferrimagnetic garnet films for microwaves, sensorics and magneto-optics, as well as thin and thick single crystal films of non-magnetic rare earth aluminium and gallium garnets for different applications in quantum electronics (solid state lasers) and scintillation techniques. He was the author of over 100 scientific papers and 25 patents. His development work and novel materials are known all over the world and they are used by scientists and engineers in Poland, Germany, France, USA, China and other countries.
Ihor’s developments were highly appreciated in Ukraine and he was a State Prize Winner of Ukraine in the field of science and technology. Without a doubt, Ihor was a talented technologist and scientist, one of those people to whom SRC "Electron-Carat" owes for its current success. But no less important is that Ihor was a sincere person, a true friend and, in a difficult situation, he came to the aid of his comrades. With his wife Ludmila, he raised his son Ihor Jr. and daughter Jane. He was an attentive husband, a caring father and a loving grandfather. This is a bitter and irreplaceable loss for his family and loved ones. All his friends will miss his guiding support, warm character, and wealth of experience.
